Julia Stephan, geboren 2002 in Berlin, studiert seit 2021 an der Universität der Künste Berlin in der Klavierklasse von Prof. Lucas Blondeel. Zuvor wurde sie am Musikgymnasium Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach ausgebildet und war seit 2013 Jungstudentin am Julius Stern Institut bei Astrid Lietz. Weitere künstlerische Impulse erhielt sie bei renommierten Professorinnen und Professoren sowie Mitgliedern bedeutender internationaler Ensembles.
Julia gewann mehrere erste Bundespreise und Sonderpreise beim Wettbewerb „Jugend musiziert“ in den Jahren 2017 bis 2021. Außerdem errang sie den 2. Preis beim „Internationalen Klavierwettbewerb Jugend 2020“ in Essen sowie den 1. Preis beim „Harald-Genzmer-Interpretationswettbewerb 2022“. Im Jahr 2023 gewann sie den 1. Preis beim „Internationalen Münchner Klavierpodium“ und erhielt weitere Sonderpreise; im selben Jahr wurde sie zudem mit dem 1. Preis der „International Pianoforte Competition“ in Brüssel ausgezeichnet. Darüber hinaus gewann sie den 2. Preis beim „8. Internationalen Béla Bartók Klavierwettbewerb 2024“ in Graz.
Als Pianistin des Bernstein Trios wurde sie beim „Deutschen Musikwettbewerb 2024“ mit einem Stipendium ausgezeichnet und für die Konzertsaison 2024/25 in die Konzertförderung aufgenommen. Zudem erhielt das Ensemble den Sonderpreis der „Freunde Junger Musiker Meerbusch-Düsseldorf“. Beim „Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Hochschulwettbewerb 2025“ gewann das Trio den 1. Preis sowie zwei Sonderpreise und errang außerdem den 3. Preis beim internationalen Kammermusikwettbewerb „Schubert und die Musik der Moderne“ 2025. Im selben Monat folgten der 1. Platz und ein Sonderpreis der Robert-Schumann-Gesellschaft beim internationalen „Schumann-Kammermusikpreis“ in Frankfurt.
Das Bernstein Trio wird von der „Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland“ gefördert und studiert bei Prof. Jonathan Aner an der Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin; seit Oktober 2025 erhält es zudem Unterricht an der École Normale de Musique Alfred Cortot in Paris. Weitere künstlerische Impulse kommen von namhaften Musikerpersönlichkeiten. Das Ensemble debütierte 2023 beim Rheingau Musik Festival und erhielt dort den Förderpreis der HA Hessen Agentur GmbH. 2025 konzertierte es beim Internationalen Mendelssohn Festival in Hamburg sowie beim Schwetzinger Mozartfest und gastiert unter anderem im Konzerthaus Berlin, im Nicolaihaus Berlin sowie in der Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.
Julia Stephan ist Stipendiatin von „Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Berlin“, der Deutschen Stiftung Musikleben, der Villa Musica Rheinland-Pfalz sowie der Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes.
Julia Stephan, born in Berlin in 2002, has been studying at the Berlin University of the Arts in Prof. Lucas Blondeel’s piano class since 2021. She previously studied at the “Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach” Music High School and, from 2013 onwards, as a junior student at the Julius Stern Institute with Astrid Lietz. She received further artistic inspiration from Prof. Bernd Glemser, Prof. Jan Michiels, Prof. Kathryn Stott, Prof. Markus Groh, Prof. Jacques Rouvier, Prof. Markus Bellheim, Prof. Ian Fountain, Jan Vogler and Prof. Antoine Tamestit, as well as from renowned musicians of the Alban Berg, Vogler and Artemis Quartets, among others.
Julia won several first national prizes and special prizes at the “Jugend musiziert” competition between 2017 and 2021. She was awarded 2nd prize at the “International Piano Competition Youth 2020” in Essen, 1st prize at the “International Bitburger Piano Competition 2022”, and 1st prize at the “Harald Genzmer Interpretation Competition 2022”. In 2023, she won 1st prize at the “International Munich Piano Podium” along with additional special prizes; in the same year, she received 1st prize at the “International Forte Competition Brussels”. Furthermore, she was awarded 2nd prize at the “8th International Béla Bartók Piano Competition 2024” in Graz.
As the pianist of the Bernstein Trio, she was awarded a scholarship at the German Music Competition 2024 and was included in the concert funding programme for the 2024/25 season. The ensemble also received the special prize of the “Freunde Junger Musiker Meerbusch-Düsseldorf”. In 2025, the Bernstein Trio won 1st prize at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University Competition, as well as the special prize for the commissioned composition and the special prize of the Freunde junger Musiker. The ensemble was additionally awarded 3rd prize at the international chamber music competition “Schubert und die Musik der Moderne” 2025. In the same month, it won 1st prize and the special prize of the Robert Schumann Society at the international “Schumann Chamber Music Award” in Frankfurt.
The Bernstein Trio is supported by “Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland” and studies with Prof. Jonathan Aner at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin. Since October 2025, the trio has also been studying with Trio Wanderer at the École Normale de Musique Alfred Cortot in Paris. Further artistic guidance has been provided by Prof. Nicolas Altstaedt, Prof. Stephan Forck and Antoine Tamestit (2024).
The ensemble made its debut at the Rheingau Music Festival in 2023, where it received the sponsorship award of HA Hessen Agentur GmbH. In 2025, it performed at the International Mendelssohn Festival in Hamburg and at the Schwetzingen Mozart Festival, and appears regularly at venues such as the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Nicolaihaus Berlin and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.
